Tea culture comes in many forms. A gaiwan (a tea bowl with a lid) can be used as a brewing vessel, but it can also be used to drink from directly. The lid is tilted to hold back the tea leaves. This style of tea drinking was popular in the old tea houses of Sichuan. The different positions of the bowl and lid communicated signals to the staff (and other guests). Nowadays, the “gaiwan code” is rarely used, but it remains a fascinating detail of tea culture.

A postcard full of tea culture.
