Culture and the arts flourished during the Song Dynasty in China. Literati gathered to practice the arts and compete with one another. Eight pastimes were considered the most elegant, called \u516b\u96c5 b\u0101 y\u01ce (\u201cEight Elegances\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u7434 <\/strong>q\u00edn<\/em><\/strong> - guqin -<\/strong> Nowadays, all string instruments are called \u7434 q\u00edn<\/em>, but during the Song Dynasty it referred specifically to the \u53e4\u7434 g\u016d q\u00edn<\/em> (\u201cancient qin\u201d). It was considered the instrument of the literati and sages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u68cb <\/strong>q\u00ed<\/em><\/strong> - chess -<\/strong> Here, chess refers to the board game \u56f4\u68cb w\u00e9i q\u00ed<\/em> (Go). All pieces have the same value, and the goal is to surround and capture your opponent\u2019s stones with your own. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4e66 <\/strong>sh\u016b<\/em><\/strong> - calligraphy - <\/strong>\u4e66\u6cd5 sh\u016b f\u0103<\/em>, writing with ink and brush, is still a popular pastime today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u753b <\/strong>hu\u00e0<\/em><\/strong> - painting -<\/strong> Chinese paintings often depict landscapes, people, and animals, sometimes only suggested with broad brushstrokes. Unlike Western paintings, emphasis is also placed on the empty space within the composition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u8bd7 sh\u012b<\/em> - poetry -<\/strong> A literatus was often judged by his ability to compose poetry, sometimes even on the spot. Important events were frequently commemorated with poems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u9152 <\/strong>ji\u016d<\/em><\/strong> - wine -<\/strong> Wine or alcohol was a fixture at lavish banquets and ancestral rites. It was also consumed to inspire and elevate the other arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u82b1 hu\u0101<\/em> - flowers -<\/strong> Many flowers carry special symbolic meanings in Chinese culture. While Western flower arrangements tend to be symmetrical, Chinese styles often favor asymmetry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u8336 ch\u00e1<\/em> – Tee – <\/strong>Tea culture reached its peak during the Song Dynasty. The most popular preparation method was \u70b9\u8336 di\u0103n ch\u00e1<\/em>, in which powdered tea was whisked with water. This method is considered the precursor to Japanese matcha preparation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
